HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY STATEMENT

The overall responsibility for health and safety matters associated with Brading Haven Yacht Club (BHYC) is vested in the Commodore. This policy statement is to be observed throughout the Club and integral Recognised Teaching Establishments. It reflects the importance that BHYC attaches to the health, safety and well-being of all Members, Guests, Staff and other persons who may be affected by our activities.

To ensure that BHYC meets its responsibilities it will:

  • meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work act 1974 and comply with other relevant legislation and instructions as may be issued;
  • provide working and operating conditions which will ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, a healthy and safe working environment. This will be achieved through the identification of potential hazards; their assessment and control with reference to the appropriate standard and best current practices; the monitoring, measurement and evaluation of performance against these standards; and correction as necessary, to achieve the required performance;
  • provide a system, through regular Committee and Staff meetings, for consultation of all Members and Staff to represent their concerns on all health and safety matters.

In addition, each Member of the Club and its Staff is required to take responsible care for their own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions. This requires the reporting to the Committee of any situation that gives rise to serious or immediate danger, or shortcomings that may create danger. Further, all Members and Staff are required to obey instructions issued in respect of health and safety.

Sailing can be demanding and, at times, dangerous. All Members and Staff should endeavour to develop their personal competence through appropriate training and experience.

It is the responsibility of the Skipper of each boat to decide whether to start or continue a race or voyage in light of his or her competence and the ability of the crew for the conditions likely to be encountered.

This Policy Statement will be reviewed every two years on change of Commodore.
